Setup

To get started you need to do some basic setup.
The materials on items can be set up per unit of measure, and up to 3 levels of details (type, group and category).

Using all 3 levels of details you can do as follows

  1. Type – use this as type of material (blister, sleeve, box, pallet…)
  2. Group – use this for grouping the materials (LDPE, HDPE, …, cardboard, paper, wood…)
  3. Category – use this for specifying fee categorization (A, B and C)

To add setup do as follows:

  1. Go to Waste Types and add what you need. Waste Type is mandatory.
This can be used for specifying the type of material (blister, sleeve, box, pallet…).
This level is the mandatory and most important setup so consider what codes you use.

  2. Go to Waste Group and add what you need.
This can be used for specifying the sort of materials, so that it is easier for you to know the category (fee).
You can use the Suggest Data function to get you started (LDPE, HDPE, …, cardboard, paper, wood…).

  3.  To add Waste Category and add what you need.
This can be used for the fee categorization (A, B and C).
You can use the Suggest Data function to get you started.

In the Packaging Waste Setup, you can mark what you want as mandatory. If you decide not to use, for instance Waste Group, then you can mark that not to be mandatory.

Here is an example of a setup on an item to illustrate how it can be.
If you use it like this then it is easier for you to understand and adjust some months later.

You can also add materials for other units of measures like INNER and OUTER (colli) to specify for instance the BOX that is used for the INNER colli which contains for instance 6 pcs.

When calculating the material usage, the system will take that material into consideration also.

Templates

To make it easier to enter packaging materials for each item you can consider entering some Packaging Templates.

The idea is that if you have multiple items that are quite the same then you create a specific one for these items including maybe the weight.

You could have a BOX+SLEEVE if you have several items like above.

Waste materials on items

Now you are ready to enter packaging materials for each item. From the item card go to Item and then Packaging.
Remember to consider using the “Copy from Template” function to ease the entry of materials on the item.

Enter these data:

  1. Item No. – Mandatory
  2. Unit of Measure – Mandatory
  3. Waste Type – Mandatory
  4. Waste Group – Optional
  5. Waste Category – Optional
  6. Weight – Mandatory
  7. Recycled % – Optional
  8. Private Label – Optional
  9. Consumer – Optional
  10. External Responsibility – Optional
  11. Start Date – Optional
  12. End Date – Optional

The Start and End Date are only relevant if materials change during the year. Then you can use start and end date to indicate what packaging is used in period one and what packaging is used in period two. In such a situation you need to set dates according to when you shipped the last of the item with old materials.

Calculating the total material usages

When you need to report to authorities then you go to Packaging Waste Journals and create a new journal for the specific reporting purpose.

Then you use the Get data function to retrieve for instance the sales data for the last quarter.

You can decide to get sales data or budget data. Budget data is mostly relevant if you need to estimate data for a whole year before the end of the year. You can filter on country, and you can filter on customer (can be relevant for instance in case of private label.

And the result will look something like this:

If you use multiple units of measures, for instance inner and outer colli, and add additional materials for those, then the system would calculate materials based on the total quantity no matter if you sold on those unit of measures.

You can run the function multiple times, but you will get a warning.

On the journal start and end date is saved. If you run it a second time with a different date range, then you get a warning.

On the journal you can specify when the journal has been reported.

From the journal you can export the data to Excel to report as you need.
